New life has been breathed into Formula 1 Grand Prix Racing and its popularity is once again on the up and up.
This new excitement is thanks to the new pin-up boy of Formula 1 motor racing. Lewis Hamilton made his indelible mark during his 2007 rookie year as an F1 driver for McLaren when he, incredibly, finished in 2nd place having only narrowly missed being crowned champion.
Lewis Hamilton is acknowledged as a highly motivated, committed and talented driver. In spite of his ambitions and early success he is a down to earth, courteous and modest young man.
Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton is British, from Stevenage in England, born January 7, 1985 making him just 22 years of age when he made his debut for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 team.
During his debut year, Lewis won 4 Grand Prix - Canada, USA, Hungary and Japan and made the podium no less than 12 times. Until bad luck during the Shanghai and Brazilian races, he was placed to take the crown for the 2007 Formula 1 Grand Prix season.
Lewis Hamilton was also a runner-up in the BBC 2007 Sports Personality of the Year, coming 2nd.
Lewis Hamilton's route to Grand Prix racing began with remote controlled cars, quickly moving on to karting at the age of eight, a route taken by many other F1 drivers. He was very successul as a karting driver. Early contact with Ron Dennis, team boss for McLaren, resulted in 1998 in a place on their young drivers programme and the promise of a future place with their racing team.
Experience was gained over the years through participation in Formula Renault, F3 and GP2 racing where, once again, he was highly successful.
A vacancy occurred in 2006 for Lewis Hamilton to join Fernando Alonso as an F1 driver for McLaren.
For the 2008 season, Lewis Hamilton was joined by another young driver Heikki Kovalainen following the departure of Fernando Alonso.
In January 2008 Lewis signed a new 5 year contract with McLaren.
Lewis has been supported since a young boy, throughout his driving ambitions, by his father Anthony who continues to act as his manager.
Like a number of other racing drivers, Lewis Hamilton has chosen to make his home in Switzerland.
